August Birthdays!

Wow! I didn't realize until this year how abundant the August birthdays are in my family! First is my mom's and gram-Bunny's on the 12th. Then Madelyn's on the 17th and Ben's on the 20th! And to top it all off, I am AWFUL at planning and executing birthday plans.... I was late mailing mom's and gram-Bunny's cards - got them MAILED on the 14th and I have nothing but a card yet for Ben's (30th) birthday. I have a plan for taking treats to Madelyn's class on her actual birthday and then we have some friends coming over on Saturday to help us celebrate but I haven't even been shopping yet for the food and decorations. Is birthday planning a special gift that only some people have or that I missed picking up along the way? Anyway, does anyone have any simple, but great ideas of how to celebrate someone's 30th birthday? I don't want to let it just slip by like a normal birthday (just a kiss, card, cake, and gift), but I don't want to do anything big like a surprise party either.... I need your thoughts or ideas!!!!

Hey, not sure if you will like this idea, but this is what I did for Jon's 30th bday a few, years a go when we lived in Seattle.

It was a surprise. I had all of his family (they live there, too) and all our friends come, totalling about 50 people or so.

We, of course, surprised him:)

I made Jambalaya, hot wings, had chips, veggies trays, fruit trays (I did it all, cuz I love cooking and such, but am so not the Martha-type, just love cooking and having people over). Then we had a Ice Cream Cake (Swanson Tradition).

For another bday, we had a Taco Bar with all the fixins' for tacos, as well as Spanish Rice, Beans, veggie trays, fruit trays, and of course, cake.

Other party things we have done, not really for bdays, just b/c we always host Team Appreciation Dinner's here for all the members of Worship/arts and their entire families is:

BBQ-cool type hamburgers, stuffed with bleu cheese and chopped honey roasted pecans; or stuffed with hot cheese and jalepenos, use your imagination. THen have all the bbq type fixings.

Or you could just invite one or two couple friends and go to a really nice dinner, out dancing, etc.

DOes he like sports, theatre? Are there any shows that he would like coming to town? One year I did this, got tickets for us and another couple friend and we went on a ferry across the sound to an Island off of Seattle and went to a concert (dinner beforehand).

For my 31 bday he sent me and my 2 best girlfriends away for the night at a snazzy hotel, dinner, movie, drinks, cake, pedicures, etc. Maybe something like that but more 'guy-ish'.

Have fun celebrating this month.

I'm not sure what kind of birthday you want to throw him... but here's a slightly romantic idea:
Find a sitter, and either cook or cater one of his favorite meals, and print out 30 reasons why he's special to you or why you love him, etc. You could even print them out individually and have them posted around the house or something. I don't know - something special but really heartfelt and meaningful. Just an idea! Hope you guys have fun celebrating! Love you!
