Too much isn't always bad
Last year was our first year to pre-plant seeds for our garden. We pre-planted tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, and basil. However, I made a mistake.... when it came time for planting, so many seedlings had done so well and I couldn't throw them away! So I planted them ALL and I planted too many! But we had a beautiful and abundant garden!
Matter of fact, in some things it was so abundant, that we couldn't even get rid of it fast enough! We planted NINE zucchini plants and was giving them to neighbors and friends, even our postman (who said "how do you make this?") We planted 7 jalapeno plants. However, this was mostly Ben's doing - for some reason he thought we would only get a handful of them off each plant.... we instead picked close to SIX HUNDRED by the end of the summer!

Hey, Ben could sell jalapenos as his day job while he makes a career out of studying and writing! Watch out farmers markets!
I know!! What would we do the other 10 months of the year? Actually, I have encouraged greatly in the past to go ahead, quit to study and write (I don't mind finding a way to support that for awhile), but he hasn't bitten on that offer.... I do love working in garden though and the money we save doing it too!
Wow, what a great garden! I'm so jealous! Ours was a total loss last year because the bugs were so bad. I hope you have another successful year!
From Lou Ellen Russell-------Wow, Mel, those pictures look like they came out of a gardening catalogue. Great pictures of great looking produce. My gardening days are gone, I suppose. When we lived in WV, we had a huge garden. Many nights, I'd go out and just "pick" our supper. We'd have freshly dug new potatoes, corn on the cob, green onions and tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers - everything just delicious. Always a pan of cornbread to accompany the garden fare and often no meat of any kind because the fresh from the garden food was just so good.
Now, I'm in the throes of hot flashes and living in the hot and humid south, cautioned about spending too much time in the sun because of the large doses of radiation I've had and crippled in my right arm from lymph node removal. (You know, the slash, burn and poison cancer treatment.) However, the heat alone would keep me indoors here after April!!!
So enjoy your youth and good health and keep up the good work. I think it is so cool that you guys do the garden thing and I know so much more healthy for all of you. Love you all, Aunt Lou
awesome! we wanna have a garden too! when do you have to get that started? maybe next year...
Tiffany,
You and Emma would LOVE having a garden! And you don't have to do anything huge and complicated. Just find a small place that is sunny and plant a few seeds of spinach or green beans or peas or broccoli... it is soooo rewarding to see them come up and then pick them for a fresh veggie treat! Then you can do something bigger next year and bigger still the next! For an all out garden, I have no idea when you would start (in Houston) but I start planting seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before our last frost (around Mother's Day). Thinking and praying for you and your family, Tiff! Love ya!
